Mark Spitz is one of the greatest living sports legends and most remembered athletes of all-time. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he won seven gold medals across individual and team events. That astonishing achievement set a world record for the most gold medals received during a single Olympic Games that last until another American swimmer, Michael Phelps, broke it in 2008. Between 1965 and 1972, Spitz won a total of 11 Olympic Medals: nine gold, one silver and one bronze. During those years, he set 33 World records. He was voted “Athlete of the Century” in water sports and one of 6 “Greatest Olympians” by Sports Illustrated in 2000.
